HERway, a women's health initiative at Winneshiek Medical Center, represents Health, Education and Resources available to women locally. We want to provide knowledge and inspiration to women so they will embrace healthier lifestyles and improve their quality of life.  HERway provides personalized health care services to women in all stages of life, in one convenient location.

Winneshiek Medical Center - Decorah Clinic and Emergency Department is staffed by Decorah Clinic Physicians - Mayo Health System and provides specialties in emergency medicine, ENT, orthopedics, family practice, urology, radiology, podiatry, midwifery, general surgery and psychology.  Additionally, we support all our patients' health with advanced diagnostics, including MRI and CT scanning, full on-site lab services, sleep studies, and cancer and chronic illness treatment, to name just a few.

Advocate for your own health care choices.  Ask your health care provider if treatment is available at Winneshiek Medical Center - we offer many services to keep you closer to home.

 

HERway Conversations

Winneshiek Medical Center is reaching out to women in our service area by offering a new venue for receiving health information: HERway Conversations. 

HERway Conversations are casual events for women of any age, and will meet at the medical center from 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm in Conference Room B the first Tuesday of December, February, April, June, August, and October.  WMC staff will provide health care information on various topics in a light-hearted atmosphere that encourages feedback and conversation. 

HERway Conversations are free and open to the public.  Registration is not required; however, participants may reserve an optional $5 box lunch by contacting WMC Nutrition Department at 563.387.3113.

Check ups, Examinations, Tests, Vaccinations

These preventive measures can help you maintain good health. Your health care provider may suggest other guidelines based on your personal or family health history.

Make an appointment with a provider at Decorah Clinic at Winneshiek Medical Center to discuss any of the following:

  • Cervical Pap Smear - Women should have a Pap smear within three years of the onset of sexual intercourse. Pap smears should be repeated every three years until age 65.
  • Childhood Immunizations - All children should have vaccinations started in infancy. Discuss these with your child's health care provider.
  • Colon Examination -  Adults age 50 and older should have a colon examination every five years.  Make an appointment with your provider to discuss colon examination options.
  • Influenza Vaccination - People age 50 and older, adults and children with chronic health conditions, and those in high-risk occupations (such as day care and health care) should receive an annual influenza (flu) vaccination during the autumn or winter months.
  • Chlamydia Screening - All women ages 16 through 24 should have a Chlamydia screening every year.
  • Osteoporosis Screening - Women age 65 and older should be screened for osteoporosis. Some women under age 65 with certain risk factors may need an earlier screening. Ask your provider for advice.
  • Pneumococcal (pneumonia) Vaccination - People age 65 and older and adults and children with chronic health conditions should be vaccinated for pneumonia. A booster is needed if the first vaccination occurred before age 65 and more than five years ago.
  • Tetanus Vaccination Booster - Adults should receive a tetanus-diphtheria vaccination booster every 10 years or as suggested by a health care provider.
  • Tobacco - Do not use tobacco. If you use tobacco, ask your health care provider about resources to help you stop. Avoid exposure to secondhand smoke.
  • Depression Screening - All women should have an annual depression screening.
  • Blood Pressure Check - Blood pressure should be measured at least every two years for adults with blood pressure less then 120/80 and more often if blood pressure is higher.   • Mammogram/Breast Examination - Women age 40 and older should have a mammogram every year. You do not need a physician's referral to schedule a mammogram. Call Winneshiek Medical Center Mammography Suite at 563-382-3022 to arrange an appointment.
  • Cholesterol Test - Cholesterol testing should begin by age 35 for men and age 45 for women. Tests should be repeated every five years. This test is available to be billed to your insurance company with an order from your doctor, or through our Walk-In Wellness Lab Testing where you do not need a doctor's order.
