Touch, Caring and Cancer
This award-winning program teaches caregivers easy-to-apply methods to bring relief and comfort to cancer patients. It is taught by Becky Smith, a WMC registered nurse and licensed massage therapist who will come to your home to teach you – at no charge.
The Cancer Institute reports that massage decreased pain in the cancer patient by 50% for up to 48 hours. Massage can provide comfort by relieving pain caused by tumors, surgery or radiation; can decrease nausea, depression, anxiety and fatigue, increase immunity and help the patient sleep better. The program must be reviewed by the patient’s oncologist for safety for the patient before beginning massage sessions.
Touch, Caring and Cancer at Winneshiek Medical Center is a free program made possible by a grant from the Winneshiek Medical Center Foundation.
