Why Get a Mammogram?

It’s natural to feel anxious about medical tests. One thing most women know deep down is that a mammogram can save their lives. Even with this knowledge, some women still fail to schedule, or choose to postpone an appointment for a mammogram. The reasons are often misdirected embarrassment, lack of support, or fear.

Richard Remark, M.D., radiologist with Mayo Clinic Health System specializes in general radiology, multiplanar imaging (CT scans, MRI) and mammography, including on-site breast biopsies.

“Patients do not require a physician referral to make an appointment with one of the six certified mammography techs on staff at Winneshiek Medical Center – two of which are qualified to perform mammograms for women with implants,” says Dr. Remark. If needed, Winneshiek Medical Center also provides breast ultrasound and ultrasound-guided biopsies, mammography-guided biopsies, stereotactic biopsies, sentinel node mapping and breast MRI. All of these tests can be performed at the medical center in Decorah.

“When it comes to breast health, early detection is the best protection,” says Dr. Remark. “According to the American Cancer Society, women should have regular mammograms beginning at age 40, or sooner if recommended by their health care provider.”
