Surfing the web, combing the shelves in local shops, searching popular magazines: you are looking for products promising easy weight loss. But do these methods really work? “Unfortunately, no,” says Emily Young Johnson, CNM, certified nurse midwife at Winneshiek Medical Center. She adds, “Most over-the-counter weight loss supplements or diet pills are just an effective marketing effort tailored to people who are desperate for a lasting solution to their weight concerns.”
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not regulate diet pills/weight-loss supplements. These supplements are not required to print what is in each pill on package labels, and some companies include ingredients that are harmful or may have a negative reaction to medications you are currently taking. You should not consider diet/weight-loss supplements to be safe.
The best answer for long-term weight loss is by eating less and exercising more. Joetta Redlin, MS, RD, LD, registered dietitian at Winneshiek Medical Center says, “Although it may not produce instant results, the best method to lose weight is by making lifestyle changes that include consuming smaller portion sizes, making nutrient-rich food choices and exercising. These behavior/lifestyle changes provide the framework for successful, long-term loss and maintenance. ”
