Softer, Warmer, Better – Digital Mammography

Digital mammography at Winneshiek Medical Center.
Karen Anderson recently experienced a softer, warmer mammogram with the new digital technology at Winneshiek Medical Center. She is standing with Sue Meyer, radiology technologist, in Winneshiek Medical Center’s mammography suite – an area specially designed for women’s breast care.

With every new year, Karen Anderson knows it’s time for her mammogram screening at Winneshiek Medical Center.  This January, Karen anticipated a different experience.  “Having worked at Bank of the West in Decorah, and now Seed Savers, I have always found it convenient to have mammograms at WMC,” says Karen.  “My experiences have all been wonderful – the mammography staff have a knack for making you comfortable – but I was looking forward to the new technology they had been advertising.”

Winneshiek Medical Center recently installed state-of-the-art digital mammography technology, which provides sharper images using lower doses of radiation, and breast cushions to provide a more positive experience for women.

Richard Remark, M.D., Mayo Clinic Health System radiologist at Winneshiek Medical Center says, “The breast cushion provides a soft, warm cushion for the breast during mammography without compromising the high level image quality.”  He adds, “By offering women a softer mammogram, WMC hopes to increase the number of area women who follow recommendations for regular screenings.”  Dr. Remark is a full-time, on-site Mayo Clinic Health System radiologist who specializes in breast health and breast disease diagnosis.

“The special padding did make my mammogram more comfortable, but it was the digital images that most impressed me.   They were immediately available for the technologist to review.  The quality was evident – the images were amazingly clear!” says Karen.

The Winneshiek Medical Center mammography suite is staffed with skilled, compassionate and certified mammography technologists, including technologists trained in mammography for women with breast implants.   If patients need further testing, Winneshiek Medical Center offers biopsy options and surgical options, including breast MRI, stereotactic breast biopsies, ultrasound-guided breast biopsies, and sentinel node mapping.  Same day appointments are often available for additional testing.

“The entire experience was quite simple,” says Karen.  “Mammograms are uncomfortable because of the very nature of the test, but the new technology made it more positive.”

Mammography screenings are available at WMC for any patient, regardless of provider, and patients do not need a doctor’s referral to schedule an appointment.  WMC mammography offers daily appointments, Monday through Friday, and extended hours for more convenient evening appointments when needed.  Call Winneshiek Medical Center Mammography at 563-387-3022 to schedule your mammogram, or visit our mammography page to learn more about the new technology.
