Toddler receives local specialty ENT care at WMC

Cash Courtney is just three years old and spends his time playing with his two pet Chihuahuas and an older brother and sister. Recently, Cash had surgery with William Remington, M.D., Mayo Clinic Health System ear, nose and throat specialist at Winneshiek Medical Center. Cash is enjoying better hearing, better sleep, and better speech thanks to the advanced care he received, close to home.

Cash Courtney is an active little boy. Just three years old, he spends his time playing with his two pet Chihuahuas and an older brother and sister. But what Cash’s family didn’t realize was his ears were preventing him from fully enjoying life. “Cash was a fussy baby from early on,” says Adrianne, Cash’s mom. “He never slept through the night and was hard to soothe – behavior that continued as he grew.”

Soon after his third birthday, Cash’s primary care provider referred the family to William Remington, M.D., Mayo Clinic Health System ear, nose and throat specialist at Winneshiek Medical Center in Decorah. “Cash had persistent fluid buildup behind his eardrums, which was muffling his hearing, affecting his speech development and causing pressure in his head. That pressure was impacting his sleep and overall health,” says Dr. Remington. “I recommended we put ear tubes in both ears to drain the fluid.”

The week before Christmas, the Courtney family traveled to Decorah from their home in Cresco for the procedure. “The nurses and staff were amazing from start to finish,” says Adrianne. “Cash is our third child, but the older two have never had surgery. My husband, Cyle, and I were nervous, but they put us completely at ease.” Cash spent his time being the center of attention at Winneshiek Medical Center. “He was just having fun and even got to ride the John Deere toy tractor back to the operating room,” says Adrianne.

Cash’s procedure was quick and he was soon waking up to his waiting parents. “The nurses took care of everything for us including scheduling follow up appointments with Dr. Remington. The entire day was so easy for Cash,” says Adrianne.

Later that evening, Cyle and Adrianne already noticed a difference in their active toddler and within a few days, he slept through the night. “Cash started to say words we had never heard from him. He was talking more and more, so much that his speech therapist was blown away by his progress,” says Adrianne.

Adrianne’s advice to families facing the same concerns? “Do the tubes!” She adds, “We heard so many great things about Dr. Remington and Winneshiek Medical Center. It was easy to trust them with the care of our son.”

Cash is back to being his crazy little self, loving the ABCs, trains, and being outside.   “He is a happier boy now,” says Adrianne. “We are thankful to have such amazing health care nearby at Winneshiek Medical Center.”
