CFS and Winneshiek Medical Center Foundation: a special partnership

Released: 03/05/18

Students from Calmar, Festina, Spillville (CFS) Catholic Schools demonstrate service to their community through an annual project with Winneshiek Medical Center.

This year, in partnership with the Winneshiek Medical Center Foundation and part of Catholic Schools Week, older students tied fleece blankets for pediatric patients in need of extra comfort when at the medical center for a procedure or stay in the hospital. Younger students assembled bookmarks for donors, which highlighted how 2017 gifts were used and the impact donors had on purchasing advanced technology for WMC, like the most recent purchase of a fetal heart monitoring system.

Emily Elsbernd, Joyce Nesvik, Rhonda Todd, Amanda Kleespies, Emily Halder, and Susanne Twedt make up the CFS committee that organizes the yearly project. As a group, they commented:

“Our goal at CFS Catholic School is to help students acknowledge that the words within the Bible should be valued, as many of the gospel teachings are relevant today. For instance, Acts 20:35 tells us, “I have shown you in every way, by laboring like this, that you must support the weak. And remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.” Winneshiek Medical Center continues to be a recipient of our students’ efforts, as the labors our students are able to provide help local community members and families. Therefore, by partnering with Winneshiek Medical Center, we are hoping that it will plant the seed for the students to continue to do community service throughout their entire lives. Furthermore, being a faith community, we hope to instill in the students that community service is an important part of our faith.”

Holly Kanengieter says, “We have developed a special relationship with the students and staff of CFS Catholic School. As they teach and demonstrate service, we are able to connect with others in our extended community. Our mission is to transform and saves lives by connecting donors to Winneshiek Medical Center so quality services are available when patients need them most. CFS Catholic School is making a difference to the people of our community and region.”
