Healing Gifts can help impact local health care

Holly Kanengieter, WMC Foundation Coordinator, shares the importance of financial gifts to the Winneshiek Medical Center Foundation and how they impact local health care.

The world is experiencing unpredictable challenges with the impact of COVID-19, and throughout this time, Winneshiek Medical Center continues to work hard to meet the needs of patients.

“WMC has been fortunate to receive several donated resources during this time,” shares Holly Kanengieter, WMC Foundation Coordinator. “From mask and gown donations to meals from local restaurants, we are blessed to live in an area where people want to help in any way they can.” Winneshiek Medical Center also received a Small Business Administration loan through the “Paycheck Protection Program” of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, and continues to explore all federal and state funding programs.

The purpose of The Winneshiek Medical Center Foundation is to support Winneshiek Medical Center through financial gifts. “The most common kind of giving is an annual or planned gift,” says Kanengieter. “These gifts assist us during uncertain times as well as ‘normal’ times. Your contributions stay right here and ensure Winneshiek Medical Center is able to care for you, your friends, neighbors and family.”

Planned gifts can be done through a will or trust benefit, retirement plan, life insurance, charitable remainder trust or matching gifts. “An example of a planned gift that comes to my mind is one done by Bob and Pat Usgaard,” shares Kanengieter. “Bob passed in 2016 and Pat in 2019; they specifically named WMC as a beneficiary of their IRA. They were passionate about a strong and vital health care system being available locally. Thinking about them brings a smile to my face, but emotions of sadness to my heart because I miss them.”

Prior to Bob’s passing he served on the WMC Foundation Board of Directors. Bob shared in a 2012 interview, “It is a great institution. How would we get along without it? We (Pat and himself) want the medical center to be so good that it is the place everyone wants to come to for care.” The late couple spent many years serving the hospital and the community.

The Winneshiek Medical Center Foundation transforms and saves lives by connecting donors with the region’s most trusted partner for health care, Winneshiek Medical Center.
