Making a difference thanks to our local community partners

Released: 02/03/20

Special thanks to Walmart Community Grants and Winneshiek County Community Foundation Grant for the purchase of refrigeration systems in all of the Winneshiek Medical Center ambulances. L to R: Steve Vanden Brink, ambulance manager at WMC; Decorah Walmart assistant managers, Casey and Shelia; Holly Kanengieter, WMC Foundation Coordinator.

In late 2019, Winneshiek Medical Center Ambulance was awarded funds through the Winneshiek County Community Foundation Grant and Walmart Community Grants for refrigeration systems to be installed in all ambulances. “The refrigerators allow for appropriate medications to be placed in a temperature controlled environment, which in return cuts costs for disposal,” says Steve Vanden Brink, ambulance manager at Winneshiek Medical Center. He adds, “It also gives WMC ambulance the ability to carry more critical care medications.”

Holly Kanengieter, WMC Foundation Coordinator, shares, “It’s a blessing to receive support from local community partners. We strive to build relationships locally to be able to continue providing financial support to Winneshiek Medical Center for improvements such as this.” Along with equipment improvements, the Foundation also supports capital growth, technology requests and education opportunities for staff.

Giving is an important factor in continuing health care in rural areas. Gifts to the WMC Foundation can be made online at or by calling the Foundation office at 563-387-3129.
