Winneshiek Medical Center radiology earns gold seal of approval

Released: 02/02/18

Winneshiek Medical Center (WMC) has been awarded a three-year term of accreditation in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) as the result of a recent review by the American College of Radiology (ACR).

The ACR gold seal of accreditation represents the highest level of image quality and patient safety. It is awarded only to facilities meeting ACR Practice Guidelines and Technical Standards after a peer-review evaluation by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field. Image quality, personnel qualifications, adequacy of facility equipment, quality control procedures, and quality assurance programs are assessed.

“Our technologists have worked exceptionally hard to meet the criteria set by the American College of Radiology,” says Lisa Radtke, WMC chief administrative officer. “This ACR gold seal of accreditation alerts our patients they are receiving care in a facility that meets the highest level of standards for imaging quality and safety.”

Since the installation of the first MRI in 2007, four specialty trained WMC radiologic technologists have performed nearly 8,000 MRI exams. Radiologic technologists who are specially trained to perform MRI at Winneshiek Medical Center include: Tasha Knutson RT(R)(CT), Sue Meyer RT(R)(M)(CT), Debra Sexton RT(R)(M), and Verna Steffen RT(R)(M)(CT).

“Our commitment to provide the most advanced care to our patients requires leading-edge technologies such as MRI,” said Sarah Urmanski, director of radiology at Winneshiek Medical Center. “We are excited to announce that we will be upgrading the MRI equipment in 2018, so that we may continue to give our rural patients better access to high-tech care.”

MRI is a noninvasive medical test that utilizes magnetic fields to produce anatomical images of internal body parts to help physicians diagnose and treat medical conditions. The ACR is a national professional organization serving more than 34,000 diagnostic/interventional radiologists, radiation oncologists, nuclear medicine physicians, and medical physicists with programs focusing on the practice of medical imaging and radiation oncology and the delivery of comprehensive health care services.  Ask your health care provider to refer you to WMC for your MRI exams, conveniently provided closer to home.
