WMC Foundation announces 2018 Annual Fund will support 3D mammography technology

Released: 10/11/18

What does giving mean to you? Thirty years ago Winneshiek Medical Center Foundation became a reality because dedicated community members saw a health care need and wanted to give by raising dollars for WMC’s first mammography machine. Throughout the years, technology has changed. This year, the WMC Foundation has committed to raising $85,000 to support the next upgrade of the mammography machine to 3D imaging.

3D mammography is a relatively new screening and diagnostic breast imaging tool to improve the early detection of breast cancer. Low-dose images from different angles around the breast are used to create the 3D picture. The detailed images allow for a better evaluation of the breast tissue, layer by layer. 3D mammography also can provide better images of dense breast tissue than conventional mammography, and is now covered by most insurance plans.

Debra Sexton, mammography technologist at Winneshiek Medical Center, says, “Patients have been asking for this type of technology for some time, and it will enhance WMC’s ability to improve the health and well-being of patients in the communities we serve. We are pleased to partner with the Foundation to support advanced technology for our patients.” She adds, “Patients will continue to benefit from softer, warmer mammograms through the use of special breast cushions during each mammogram, as they have come to expect from their experience at Winneshiek Medical Center.”

Winneshiek Medical Center Radiology is home to one of the area’s most comprehensive and advanced diagnostic imaging departments, performing over 2000 mammography exams each year. Mammography screenings are available at WMC for any patient, regardless of provider, and patients do not need a doctor’s referral to schedule an appointment.  WMC mammography offers daily appointments, Monday through Friday, and extended hours for more convenient evening appointments when needed. Patients can schedule directly by calling WMC Radiology at 563-387-3022.

Make your Gift

Gifts to the 2018 Annual Fund will support the purchase of newest mammography technology for our local community. Holly Kanengieter, WMC Foundation Coordinator, says, “This year’s Annual Fund campaign encourages donors to consider what giving means to them – maybe it is about helping others, showing compassion for people they will likely never meet, or to support healing technology for our family, friends and neighbors. Gifts in support of local health care transform and save lives. ”

Gifts can be made online at www.winmedical.org/annual-fund, or call the Foundation office at 563-387-3129.
