Star of the Year

Bev Rustad, RN, a member of Winneshiek Medical Center’s Med-Surg (inpatient) department, received the 2016 Star of the Year award at WMC’s annual Staff Appreciation Celebration held in February.

Bev was selected as the 2016 Star of the Year because of her dedication to providing quality health care and her commitment to her co-workers. When presenting the award, Lisa Radtke, chief administrative officer of Winneshiek Medical Center said, “Although a veteran in the profession, Bev is not afraid of change and embraces new practices because they will provide better outcomes for patients.” One of Bev’s responsibilities is to create the work schedule for over 30 nurses in her department, a task she takes very seriously. Ms. Radtke continued, “Bev cares about fellow colleagues in the department, and takes steps to ensure they are satisfied in their job as well as have time to spend with their families.”

Bev has worked in Med-Surg at Winneshiek Medical Center since 1989. She currently serves as Hospitalist Nurse, a position that directly supports physicians as they provide care to inpatients. Ms. Radtke said, “Bev is one who has worked here for many years and still comes in each day ready to take on new challenges. She is conscientious, dedicated and knowledgeable with an attitude that motivates others to be their best.”

Ms. Radtke concluded, “Bev is described by her co-workers as kind, compassionate, steady, level-headed, experienced, loyal and unflappable. I am honored to name her as our 2016 Star of the Year.”

Provider of the Year

Winneshiek Medical Center named Scott Bierman, M.D., as the 2016 Provider of the Year at WMC’s annual Staff Appreciation Celebration held in February.

Dr. Bierman, a general surgeon with Gundersen Health System, has served on Winneshiek Medical Center’s active medical staff since 1992. During that time, he has served as president of the medical staff, president of the medical executive committee and as the medical advisor for Surgery.

The Mayo Clinic Health System colleague who nominated Dr. Bierman for the Provider of the Year award shared he has a “constant desire to do what is right and best for the patient – always!”

Robert Flinchbaugh, D.O., chief medical officer of Winneshiek Medical Center said when presenting the award, “Dr. Bierman sets high expectations personally and has those same expectations of others on the care team. However, he is always teaching – always sharing knowledge – so that as a team, everyone can be better.”

Dr. Flinchbaugh went on to say, “Dr. Bierman is described as being ‘brilliant’ but able to shift to everyday words so patients trust that their interest is the only interest being considered. Patients report feeling like they are talking to a friend when with Dr. Bierman. They are comfortable, at ease, and know they have his undivided attention.”

Dr. Bierman received his medical degree from the University of Iowa and completed his residency at Iowa Methodist Medical Center. He is a Fellow with the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Beirman is certified by the American Board of Surgery.
