A new life chapter begins with volunteering
When Mary Jane Maly of Decorah retired from Northeast Iowa Community College in 2006, she knew she wanted to keep busy. “My children had grown and moved on, and I looked forward to new opportunities in retirement,” she says. Within just two short months, Mary Jane had submitted a volunteer application to Winneshiek Medical Center and began serving with her first assignment in the Auxiliary Gift Shop.
Twelve years later, Mary Jane can still be found covering shifts in the Gift Shop. However, her volunteer work has grown to include serving on the WMC Auxiliary Board, Gift Shop Committee, Scholarship Committee, special events, and “pretty much anything they ask me to do,” she says.
Mary Jane also volunteers for Aase Senior Services and her church. “I enjoy meeting people who I might otherwise never meet,” she says. Laughing, Mary Jane adds, “I am not very good at remembering names, but I never forget a face!”
Volunteers provide a wide range of services to the medical center that complement individual talents and abilities. Volunteer assignments are arranged to fit personal lifestyles and schedules, with commitments that range from daily to once a year.
